DISCHARGED SOLDIERS
Up to date, the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department has dealt with 6045 cases. Of these, 5325 have been disposed of, 511 are under action, and 209 are. not ready for action. Of the cases dealt with, it is interesting to note that 1258 men have been placed m employment.; 2258 are recorded as having work to return to or have reenlisted; and 1199 have stated that they do not require assistance. At the present moment 129 men want work. Auckland heads the list with 34, Dunedin comes second with 17, Christchorch totals 10, and Wellington has 5.
There -was some plain speaEng hy ■Mr. Henrick, S.M., when dealing with a case a.t Napier on Monday, in which a Senior Cadet was charged with, re- j fusing to obey his officer, and also with using insulting language. His Worship said that the fine allowed by the Act in cases of this sort was altogether too small. He' held that if a Cadet under 18 were treated to the birch occasionally it would soon extinguish this ignoble practice on the part of the obstinate youth. There was no doubt that in some cases the obstinate Cadet ruled the parade by his misbehaviour. Be quoted an instance which he saw only recently. A company of these Cadets was drilling,- and one Cadet who was lying down in the road refosed to get up, despite the officer's attempt to make him do so. In this manner the parades are seriously interfered with. One wav of putting an end to this annoying practice would be for the officers to send the defaulters to the police station to receive a stroke or two from the birch. Tor those over 18 years of age. .he suggested that they'should be sent to camp for 10 days and made to do some hard' work. -A fine of 20s with 7s costs, in default 14 days' military detention, was imposed. His Worship considered that the Defence jieople shonld make the necessary representations to have themaximum fine increased.
Mr. J. L. Morgan, railway traffic 'inspector at Chrotcharch, has been appointed, on promotion, to the positionof atataonmaster- at ■■ -Greymouth..
