THE FLAX INDUSTRY

A MONTH'S GRADING.

A return has been prepared by the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, Industries, and Commerce, showing the quantities of hemp, tow, and stripper slips graded at the ports of the Dominion during November, 1916. It gives the following particulars: — Hemp.—The total number of bales graded was 14,738, as compared with 12,917 for the corresponding period of last year, an increase of 1821 bales. For the twelve months ended 30th November, 1916, the number of bales graded was 149,627, as compared with 113,731 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 35,896 bales.

Tow.—During the month 3626 bales were dealt I with as compared with 3569 for the corresponding month of last year, an increase of 57 bales. For the twelve months ended 30th November, 1916, the number of bales graded was 41,258 as compared with 30,335 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 10,923 bales.

Stripper Slips.—During the month the number of bales graded was 465 as compared with 731 for the corresponding month of last year, a decrease of 266 bales. For the twelve months ended 30th November, 1916, the number of bales graded was 6478 as compared with 3391 for the previous twelve months, an increase of 3087 bales.
