AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND COMPARED.
SYDNEY, 7th December. The New South Wales Stat. Assembly had a record sitting—continuously since Monday—debating the Estimates. Mr. Holman (the Premier), in justifying an expenditure of £6000 for representation; in America, quoted Mr. Nielsen's report showing that whereas New Zealand was nearer America than Australia, the freights were 25 per cent/ lower. New Zealand exports to America in the last three years had increased by 234 per cent., or £1,250.000, while Australia's exports to America had increased by 500 per cent., or £9.000,000. In 1913 the balance of trade with America atrainst New Zealand was: 34' per cent., and in 1916 it was 18 per cent., as against Australia's 59 per cent, and 4 per cent, respectively.
