ON THE FRONT SOUTH OF BAPAUME.
ENEMY ATTACKS BROKEN.
(AUSTRALIAN-NETT ZEALAND CAIMS ASSOCIATION.) LONDON, 24th October.
Sir Douglas Haig reports : We advanced our line eastward of Gueudecourt and Lesboeufs, capturing one thousand yards of trenches. Our artillery stopped the enemy's attempted attack southward ;of Grandeourt. Of two raids which were attempted on Sunday night against our trenches in the Gommecourt neighbourhood, our fire stopped one, and we inflicted heavy casualties. The secoild raid penetrated our outpost lines, but a counter-attack promptly drove the enemy out.
Our aeroplanes on Sunday bombed two railway stations behind the enemy's lines, hitting a train in motion, and doing much damage to buildings and rolling stock. Seven of the enemy's machines were brought down, and many others, in a damaged condition, were forced to descend. Eight of ours have not returned.
