"A BUFFER"

BOARD OF TRADE CRITICISED.

The Central Chamber of Commerce yesterday adopted, as a remit for the Conference of Associated Chambers, the following recommendation regarding the Board of Trade: "That this conference is of opinion the Board of Trade, New Zealand, as constituted, is not representative of the commerce and industries of the Dominion,- that tho board should be reconstituted and . have powers to extend th# internal trado of the Dominion and also to estaliish other markets than (those possessed by the Dominion ■at tho present time." The chairman (Mr. C. M. Luke) said they had expected a Board of Trade which would be on somewhat similar lines to tho British organisation. As it was, the board was a. buffer between, tho Government and the people on the cost of living. It was not at all the kind of board they expected, but a political organisation. A member: An absolute failure.

Tho chairman : I am certain that the people will not tolerate this as a Board of Trade for much longer.

Mr. G. Winder said the opportunities for organisation of new industries were numerous just now. Some classes of goods were unobtainable elsewhere, and others were enormously increased in price by high freights.

Tlie remit was adopted unanimously by the council.
