LOSS OF THE VESPER

All hope has been abandoned in regard to the possibility of the safety of the crew of the Auckland scow Vesper, which was found floating, bottom uppermost, about a week ago off Wbangaparapara, Great Barrier. A telegram was received in Auckland on Monday from Port Fitzroy stating that the scow's dinghy was picked up by Maoris near the entrance to Port Fitzroy. The boat was' completely smashed. The missing men are: Captain G. S. Davis, of Brown-street, Ponsonby, married, one child; Leslie Craw, mate, single, relative-, residing at Papanui, Christchurch, and believed to have a married sister living in the Waikato; and Charles Smith, engineer, residing at No. 116, Upper Nelson-street, Auckland, married, four children.
