TERRITORIAL CAMPS
ATTITUDE OF EMPLOYERS.
When the decision of the Defence Department to: hold Territorial camps this year became known (states the annual report of the Employers' Federation) representations were made to the Advisory Board that in consequence of so many employees having, enlisted it would entail great hardship on certain trades and businesses if still more workers were to be drawn from their employment during the period of annual training. Upon the matter being referred to Defence quarters a conference was arranged," when it was submitted by the officers of the General Staff that it would ,be dangerous to break into the working of the Territorial scheme by refraining from holding the camps, even for one year j besides which 'it was expected that the training camps would prove very valuable as recruiting centres for the Expeditionary Forces. An undertaking was given' that no employer would be unduly inconvenienced, as extra casual.training camps would be held in order that -where a number of employees of any firm were liable for training they could be called up in small numbers. After reviewing the whole position the advisory board decided that, it would not 'be advisable to raise any objection to the holding of the (camps. The Defence Department did everything possible to minimise .inconvenience, to employers,, and no complaints of any kind were received.
