PETONE AFFAIRS
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Petone Borough Council was held- last evening,, presided over by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan). Councillors -Forsyth, Gaynor, Cox, Brocklebank, Anderson, TM'Dougajl, M'Kenzie, Jones, and Trueman were also present.
Messrs.. Angi'_> and Reid were granted a second-hand dealer's license.
Two ratepayers were granted an' extension of time in which to connect with the sewerag6 system, and another ratepayer was granted till the first week in December in which to pay current rates.
The Wellington Harbour Board advised that the cost of 4 the weighbridge recently erected was £184 7s Bd. It was decided to pay the amount out of the unexpended balance of the wharf loan.
A renewal, of the tenancy of a shop on the Esplanade was granted to C. W.. Speers
Providing satisfactory arrangements can be made to fill his place, Mr. W. Toon, in charge of the sewerage power house, is to be granted fourteen days' holiday leave. Eulogistic references were made, by the Mayor to Mr. Toon's work.
A suggestion from the Lower Hutt Borough Council that Petone should erect three lamps in' Wakefield-street was not agreed to. It was decided to erect one each /in Ava-street and Plun-ket-avenue.
An employee of the council at present in the Wellington Hospital was granted full pay during his sickness. Tlie Engineer was instructed to report to the council as to the time lost through bad weather by labourers in the employ of the council last winter, in order that a request from the Labourers' Union for an extra penny per hour for that season could be dealt with. • ■ . .
At the request of Mr. Packwood, the council agreed to allow the matter of the fencing of his section to stand over for twelve months. . .
At the request of Councillor Anderson, the Mayor outlined the new proposals of the council with reference to the management of the fire station, which, had led. to the resignation of the present Superintendent. Negotiations with the Fire Brigade were not yet complete, and a fuller report would be given at a later stage. , * On the motion of Councillor Cox, it was decided to follow the lead of the Lower Hutt Council in its request to the Railway Department to have the last train from Lower Hutt to Wellington delayed on one night per week, at least, to 11 o'clock. It was also decided to request the Department to remedy a longstanding grievance and . allow the afternoon train to Wairarapa to stop at Petone. - '*> /
