FAMOUS PAINTERS
In the Dominion Museum last evening, Mr. H. Griffiths gave an'interesting illustrated lecture, taking as liis subject' tho works of art of ancient and modern painters. He dealt especially with art as representing Nature, and compared the studies of artists interpreting' natural models. Lantern slides of famous pictures were screened,, among; the most; notable, being those of. Rembrandt, . the: Dutch shade expert; "Raeburu, Velas-' queK, Reynolds, and. 'l'itian, tiie wonderful . colour painter. Some remarkablygood reproductions of land and seascape works were exhibited, including some ;pretty Watteau scenes; delicate paintings by Corot, Millet, Lorraine, and others, with the;r realistic .colour' schemes. ■ Turner's artistry in this branch was revealed in some well-select-ed copies of his land and- sea representations. Modern sketching and painting errors were outlined by the lecturer with the aid of the lantern, some of the later .productions being shown reversed, so, that the technical faults were apparent. Rodin's living sculpture was exhibited in all its boldness of beauty. Mr. Griffiths was accorded. a hearty vote of thanks at the conclusion of his lecture.
