WANGANUI, 31st August,

As a sequel to the death of a young woman at the Wanganui Hospital, Richard Patrick Pollard, formerly recruiting office for the Defence Forces at Hawera-, was charged at the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Justice Edwards, with the. illegal use of an instrument with intent to procure i. miscarriage. The prosecution relied on deceased's deposition, which stated that an operation was performed by a strange man in a bedroom at the Dominion Hotel in Hawera, usually occupied by another Defence officer, and a companion of accused. The defence was that the accused was no party to the operation. The jury disagreed, and a fresh trial was ordered. '
