(Received August 26, 8.20 a.m.)
LONDON, 25th August.
The Military Cross has been awarded to Lieut. Richard Ridiford, a New Zealander. When his commander was wounded, Lieut. Riddiford took charge of a raid, and organised and led a charge of party. During the withrawal he remainin No-man's Land until every man was back.
[Lieut. Richard Riddiford is a son of the late Mr. Richard Riddiford, grandson of the late Mr. Daniel Riddiford, and a nephew of Mrs. D. G. A. Cooper. Details which have reached Masterton of the incident leading to the award of the Military Cross to Lieut. Riddiford are to the effect that after an engagement a number of Ruahine men lay wounded in No-man's Land. Nine times Lieut. Riddiford and Sergt.-Major Frost went out, and each time they brought back two men, getting through their gallant work successfully. On the roll being called it was ascertained that one man was still missing. Lieut. Riddiford desired to go and search for this man, and was only with difficulty prevented from doing so. Later the man was found alive, but blinded.]
