In the early hours of the morning of 13th August last, a young man was seen by Constable Pearce to emerge from a lane leading into Tory-street. His suspicions being aroused, the constable questioned the " midnight prowler," but only received incoherent and evasive answers to .his questions. While questioning the young man, Constable. Pearce noticed that .he carried a suspiciouslooking instrument, apparently one of those used by criminals for the purpose of picking locks. Just then the man struck the constable a violent blow on the arm, and succeeded in getting away. The alarm was given, with the result that the wanted one was eventually secured in Lome-street, but minus the incriminating weapon. He was taken into custody and charged in the Magistrate's Court this morning, under the name of Harry Thomas, with being an idle and disorderly pevson. The Magistrate (Mr. L. G.'Reid, S.M.) sent the accused to gaol for one month.
