VICTORIA COLLEGE
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL
A meeting of the Victoria College Council was held last evening, the following being present:—Messrs. C. Watson (in the chair), W. Ferguson, W. S. La Trobe, R, A.' Wright, T. R. Fleming, Dr. C. Prendergast Knight, Professors Rankine Brown and J. M. E. Garrow. A recommendation by the Finance Committee that all certificates of College examinations should be countersigned by the Registrar wa-s adopted. . The question of library accommodation was discussed, members stressing the need of additional room for the keeping of the College books. Mr Ferguson said that the whole position would require to be faced sooner or later, and it would, no doubt, be found necessary to ereot a proper library Other members urged the necessity for providing something which would last for all time, and not merely be a temporary expedient. A recommendation by the Finance Committee to the effect that the chairman, Mr. Morton, and Mr Ferguson be appointed a committee to consider the question was agreed to. After some discussion recommendations by the Professorial Board with regard to certain amendments in the terms regulations were adopted
It was decided to appoint a committee, comprising- two members each from the Council, the Professorial Board, the Court of Convocation, and the Students' Association, to consider the question raised by Mr Yon Haast's notice of motion to the Senate regarding the compiling of a roll of honour. A portion of the motion reads as follows: —"That a committee be appointed to compile a roll of honour of all those professors or teachers, graduates and undergraduates of the University of New Zealand and unmatriculated bona fide students of any New Zealand University College who have taken or shall take part in the present war, hereinafter called 'soldier members,' and to Submit such roll of honour as far as compiled and a scheme for its publication to the Senate for approval at its January meeting ; that the committee invite the co-operation in such compilation to the governing body,-the Professorial Board and the Students' Association of each of the University Colleges, and of the relations and friends of the soldier members ; that the roll of honour take the following form: (a) An alphabetical list of all the soldier members with the respective ranks to which [ they have attained, the countries and I campaigns in which they fought, and the fate that befell them ; (b) a short biography and photograph of each where procurable; (c) a special biography of those who have achieved special distinction, or who have been distinguished for special gallantry ; (d) a general introduction describing the part taken by the soldier members in the war, (c) contributions by soldier members descriptive of the campaigns in which they were engaged or poems or other contributions by members of the University having reference to the war." It was resolved that the chairman and Mr. Evans be the representatives of the Council at' the meeting. Accounts totalling £951 14s 9d were passed for payment.
