WAIMAI'S DECISIVE WIN

(OT TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION •) CHRISTCHURCH, 15th August. There wa-s a large attendance on the opening day of the Grand National Meeting, including the Governor and his suite. The money put through the totalisator aggregated £46,366, against £43,396 for the corresponding day lastyear. Following are the remaining results:— GRAND NATIONAL STEEPLECHASE, of 1500 soys. Fagot and Recharge came down at the first of the stand double. The next jump proved fatal to New ' York and Queen's Post. The next jump—the sodwall—brought down Bravest, Bransfleld, Captain Mackay, and Ngatoa, and at tho next fence Braeburn ran off. Waimai won by three lengths from Merry Lad, who was twice that distance in front of Black Sea. Idealism was fourth. Time, 7min 24 l-ssec. Enfield Steeplechase, of 250 soys ; two miles.—l Gluepot, 10.9, 1; 4- Ikowai, 10.11, 2; 2 Nita, 10.11, 3.
