EFFECT OF BAD WEATHER.
Summarising the work during July, in dealing with unskilled labour the monthly report of the 'Labour Department (Wellington Brunch) sta-tes: —"During the month 177 applicants for employment registered their names, as compared with 226 for the previous period. Of these 108 were placed, 82 in private positions and 26 were sent to Government works. There were 35 married men and 73 single men, with 100 dependents. Those assisted comprised carpenters, farm hands, hotel workers, and general labourers. They came from the following places:—North Island 26, Sou|.h Island 22, Commonweolth 7, Great Britain 49, elsewhere 4. In addition, three wives and two children were assisted to join their relatives. "The weather lias not been conducive to outdoor employment, and this has been a great drawback in placing men. There are still vacancies for carpenters, a brickmaker, bricklayers, bushmen, scrub-cut-ters, and farm hands. As recorded last month, several men over 65 years of age have applied for employment, but have not been placed up to tho present time."
