GOOD-CHARACTER CERTIFICATES.
Replying to a question by Mr. F_ A. 'Wright as to whether he will instruct the Defence Department to grant a suitable certificate of 'character.to all honourably discharged soldiers who have done their duty at the front, the Hon. James Allen states that, the characters are now shown in ;all discharge certificates issued to soldiers. Owing to difficulty, iv arriving at the character of a soldier returned from overseas, discharge certificates were. for a time issued without characters—the latter being supplied on a separate certificate when the information was available. This practice was given up because soldiers with bad characters were able to produce a similar discharge certificate to soldiers.- honourably discharged, and the general public did not realise that no character was shown on the certificate.
