CASES STEADILY MOUNTING UP
The progress statement of the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department., as at thn 22nd June, 191G, gives Ihe following details :— (I.) Total number, of men on register: (A.) disposed of, ilfcidl; (B.) under action, 11G1; (C.) not ready for action (including men returned by recent transports), 963. (II.) Keports received from interviewing officers, 3226: reports in hands of interviewing; officers, 399; reports issued, 3G25. ' (III.) Particulars showing how cases dealt with :— (A.) Oases disposed of: (a.) Left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 103; (b.) re-enlisted or returned to military duty, or have work to "return to, etc., 1203; (c.) men who have signed "assistance not required," 738; (d.) men placed in employment, Gl4; (c.) men who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who have accepted work the Department found for them, but have failed to start work, 95; (f) men wk« have drawn sections of land, 7S; total, 2831. (B.) Cases under action : (a.) Reports upon cases not yet returned by officers making enquiries, 399; (b.) awaiting further advice (chiefly men who have stated that they are not yet desirous of work), 391; (c.) at present-on Employment Wanted Register, 371; total, 1161. (C.) Cases not ready for action : Men recently returned to New Zealand, now convalescing, not ready for employment, and not yet discharged by the military authorities,. 963. Grand total, 4955. The schedule showing location of unplaced men is as follows :— Whangarei, 5; Thames, 9 ; Diirgaville, 3 ; Auckland, 63 ; Hamilton, 11; Rotorua, 1; Tauranga, 6; Opotiki, —; Te Kuiti, 1; Taumarunui, 2;' Gisborne, 7 ; Napier, 4; Hastings, 7,; Dannevirke, —; Taranaki, 6; Wanganui. 5 ; Taihape, 1; Marton, 1; Feilding, l'; Palmerston North, 5; Pahiatua, 2.; Wairarapa, 10; Nelson, 2; Blenheim, 5; Christchurch, 48; Ashburton, 1; Greymouth, 12; South Canterbury, 8 ; Oamaru, 2; Otago, 59; Southland, 12; Wellington, 11; miscellaneous (chiefly men desiring Government employment in different districts), 61;: total, 371.
The 11 unplaced men in the Wellington district desire employment as follows :— Messenger, 1; drivers, 2; light work, 4; any work, 2; builders' labourer,!; farm hand, 1. \
