Sir Joseph Ward, who went South on Saturday evening, will return to Wellington to-morrow.

His Honour Mr. Justice Hosking is presiding at the Supreme Court sessions at Nelson.

Mr. J. W. Marchbanks, engineer of ths Wellington Harbour Board, has returned from a trip to Australia.

Captain C. F. Post, of the Transports Board, returned to Wellington by the Maori from the South yesterday.

Mr. W. W. de Castro, who until his recent retirement ' was District i Land Registrar at Invercargill, has joined a business firm at Dunedin.

Mr. James Macintosh, French Consular Agent in Wellington, has sufficiently recovered from his recent indisposition to be able to attend his office. '•'•','

Sergeant G. H. Holmes, son .of Mr., A. H. Holme3, formerly clerk, of, the Magistrate's Court, in Wellington, has received a commission in the reinforcements. -

Mr. T. P. Gilfedder, chairman of the Auckland Public Service Association, has arrived in Wellington to attend the Civil Service Conference, which opens tomorrow morning.

Scoutmaster W. Wortley French, of the Riwaka Boy Scout Troop (Nelson), has been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Dr. A. G. Paxton, as Commissioner for the Nelson province.

Professor Hugh Stewart, of Canterbury; College, who left with, the Main Body, as a lieutenant, Has receivedisteady promotion, his last step being to lieu-tenant-colonel. He is now in France in command of the new battalion.

Mr. H. J. Dawson, barrister, of Alberta, Canada, was a passenger hy the Moana from San Francisco on Saturday. Mr. Dawson is on a holiday visit to Australasia, and leaves for Sydney by the Manuka next week.

Amongst the passengers who arrived in Wellington from Lyttelton yesterday were Captain C. M'Donald, Marine Superintendent of the Union Company, and Captain J. E. Bone, Marine Superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Company.

Captain JV B. Davis, who left New Zealand with the Main Expeditionary Force, has cabled from London to his father, Major H. F. Davis, V.D., that the Medical Board has granted him five months' leave of' absence on account of a wound in his ankle, and that he proposes, to take a trip to New,Zealand.

Mr. ,A. E. Hedges, Diocesan Secretary at Nelson, has obtained leave of absence to join the Expeditionary Farces. He expects to leave Nelson for the non-commissioned officers' training camp at Trentham towards the end of next month. The Standing Committee of the diocese has appointed the Rev. J. H. Dart, vicar of Wakefield, as act-ing-Diocesan Secretary during his absence. : Mr. Hedges served as a non-com-missioned, officer in the B'irst New Zealand Contingent in the Sotrth African War. , . . ....

Private advice has been received in Wellington thai Lieut. J. Naylor, formerly chief officer of the Komata, who left Wellington early, last year for London by the ISaramea in order to offer his services to the Admiralty, has been laid up in England for the last three months with pneumonia, but hopes to rejoin his ship shortly. Lieutenant Naylor is well known in Wellington. On arrival in England last, year he was posted "itf'H.M.S.v Seagull as sub-lieuten-ant. He was later promoted to lieutenant, and, at the time of taking ili, was senior navigating officer of a destroyer flotilla. ' > - v .'.

The funeral of the late Capt. James Eman Smith took place yesterday. afternoon, the Bev. A. M., Johnson, M. A , vicar of St. Paul's, officiating", at the graveside. The deceased gentleman was born at Birr, King's County, Ireland, and was educated at the Rev. -Erasmus Smith's College-ill that county.; He entered the Treasury Department in 18S0, remaining there till 1902. Later, ha was Commissioner of Old-age Pensions, Administrator of the Cook Islands, and at the time of his death held the position of Under-Secretary for Immigration. At the funeral, the Government ■was represented by Sir Francis Bell. Mr. Frank Andrews, Secretary to the Cabinet, and heads of .the various Departments were also present, as well as representatives of the Wellington Football Club and the Star Boating Club. Among the many wreaths were those from the Hon. Dr. Pomare, the Old-age Pensions Department, the Star Boating Club, and the Wellington Football Club.
