ESTIMATES CRITICISED,

The Hutt River Board met yesterday lin the Town Hall. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and others present were : Mr. J. W. M'Ewan (Mayor of Petone), Mr. H. Baldwin (Mayor of Lower Hutt), Mr. C. C. Crump (Mayor of Onslow), Mr. H. J. Monaghan (chairman of the Makara County Council), Mr. M. W. Welch (chairman of the Hutt County Council), and Mr. F. T. Moore (representing other local bodies interested in the road). The estimates-of the cost of upkeep as prepared by the City Engineer were as follow i £ Labour and cartage ■ ... 1200 Metal (7000 yards) 3325 Screenings ... 260 Rolling (use of steam roller and driver, 190 days at 30s) ... ... 285 Contingents ... 100----5170 There was a considerable amount ct' discussion on the estimates, which several of those present thought to be .too high. Mr. M'Ewan moved that' the estimates should be ' cut down by half, and that the City Council should be asked to make the necessary financial arrangements to enable a concrete road to be made in the near future. This was seconded by Mr. Baldwin, but eventually," on the suggestion of--the Mayor, it was decided : "That the estimates should be referred back to tha City Council for further consideration, with a view to reduction, having regard to the minimum requirements, until such time as a more permanent work can be carried out, and that the City Council make the necessary financial arrangements for a concrete road at the earliest possible date." It was also resolved that an annttal charge on motor-cars j should be made if the board has the ■power.
