It may not be generally known that Lord Kitchener had a narrow escape from losing his life in the Manawatu Gorge while on his visit to New Zealand some years ago (says an exchange). He and his .party were motoring through the Gorge, when they came to a small bridge over a deep ravine which the county workmen wore engaged in repairing. The bridge had beeai stripped of the decking, and the motor-car was unable to pass until temporary repairs had been carried out. Lord Kitchener, with his practical knowledge of engineering, proceeded to instruct the workmen in a speedy method of replacing the decking. While so engaged, ho happened to step on the end of a piece of loose decking, which tilted with his weight, and the great soldier had a most narrow escape from being precipitated to the rocky bottom of the deep ravine.
