SKEFFINGTON SHOT WITH OUT ORDERS

DATE OF CASEMENT'S TRIAL,

(Received May 11, 11 a.m.)

LONDON, 10th May,

Mr. Asquith reported that Skeffington was shot on the 26th April without the knowledge of the military authorities. The matter was being investigated, and the officer concerned had been arrested and would be court-martialled.

The trial of Sir Roger Casement would begin next Monday.

Mr. Asquith said he had reason to believe there would be no further necessity to proceed with extreme measures against the rebels; but he'could not give any undertaking on the point.
