TERRACE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

Yesterday was the seventy-fourth anniversary of the Terrace Congregational Church,' and special services were held to mark the occasion. The Rev. J. Reed Glasson, pastor, preached in the forenoon, .taking as his text John xv., 5. He said ithe Congregationalists had tried to reproduce tie New Testament idea of the Church. The early churches, he added, were naturally free and selfgoverning, and did not tolerate any external control. He urged ithat the membership of the church should be treated as a very real thing; and to meet the needs of the time a new consciousness of the church was wanted. It was only if the church members realised this ideal that the church could fulfil its mission.

_ Tho first Congregationalists in Wellington worshipped in a little building in Thorndon. In 1849 they removed to Woodward-street, the pastor being the Rev. Jonas Woodward. The present church building was erected some twentyeight years ago. The Rev. Dr. West, who died in 1889, was pastor for 19 years. Rev. Mr. Glasson has been in charge for 22 years. One of the marked characteristics of The Terrace Congregational Church has been its broad and liberal spirit in giving to outeide and denominational objects, missions, etc.
