The Hon. F W Lang, M.P. for Manakau, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, arrived in this city by the Main Trunk express yesterday.

The Hon. James Allen, Minister of Defence, was a passenger for Dunedin by the ferry steamer last evening. He is expected to return to Wellington about the middle of next week.

Mr. M. J. Miller has been re-elected chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board.

Mr. A. H. M Wright, of Patea, has been appointed engineer of the Kairanga County Council.

Mr. C. A. M'Millan, of Wellington, is to take charge of the Tourist Office at Invercargill, vice Mr. Hargest, who is going into camp.

Rev. W. H. A. Vickery, of Auckland, has accepted a call to the Alicetown Congregational Church,' Lower Hutt, and will commence his ministry on Sunday, 28th inst

Mr. W. Slaughter, Inspector of Awards at Wellington, has been promoted to succeed the late Mr. W J. Culver as In-spector-in-Charge of the Labour Department' at Palmerston North.

Mr. Thomas Aitken; who recently retired on superannuation from the position of Assistant Chief Postmaster at Auckland, is at present in Wellington, on his way back to the North, after attending the Oddfellows' Conference.

Lieutenant Stenhouse, commander of the Aurora, sent a telegram to the Prime Minister this week stating that he will probably visit England, returning to rejoin his ship when it leaves about November for the Antarctic to • relieve the waiting explorers.

Last evening a presentation was made to Mr. P. W. Lamb by members of the staff, of the Defence Stores, Bucklestreet, on the occasion of his leaving for a better position in the country. The presentation took the form of a handsome set of carvers and a gold-mounted cigarette holder.

On Wednesday evening a presentation was made by the staff of the Defence Stores, Buckle-street, to Major O'Sullivan, late Quartermaster-General, who has been promoted to the ' position of Inspector of Ordnance at headquarters. The presentation took the form of two divan chairs and a pair of binoculars in case. Many members of the staff who had worked under Major o'Sullivan expressed their regret at his leaving ■ the Defence Stores, and . took the opportunity of acknowledging the kindly treatment they had always received at his hands. '
