THE FIGHTING AT KATIA
TURKS APPEAR TO BE WITHDRAWING
The High Commissioner reports :— LONDON, 25th April, 3.20 p.m. The fighting in the Katia district was more severe than was at first intimated. The enemy casualties included seventy killed and left behind, and twentyeight made prisoner. The Turks also abandoned 5000 rounds of small arm ammunition, four full boxes of machine-gun belts, twenty-eight shells, .and eighty rifles. One of our mounted brigades was engaged all day with the enemy. On Monday eight aeroplanes attacked. Katia, and effected a complete surprise. The hostile camp was 'completely destroyed. Tiie enemy suffered severe casualties from bombs dropped from aeroplanes, and from machine-gun fire. There has been no further fighting-since Monday, and the enemy appeared to be withdrawing from the Katia district. (fress Association.) (Received April 26, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, 25th April. A company of Royal Scots gallantly defended the Duweidar oasis, and the enemy left behind a hundred killed and prisoners. The Australian Horse, pursuing the Turks, inflicted further loss, and captured a number. One mounted brigade was engaged throughout the day. Eight aeroplanes surprised and completely destroyed the enemy camp at Katia, and the Turks retreated, suffering severely from bombs and machine guns.
