ON THE TIGRIS

BRITISH ATTACK FAILS

AFTER GALLANT EFFORT BY COMPOSITE BRIGADE.

(Received April 24, noon.) LONDON, 23rd April. Sir Percy Lake reports:—The attack on the northern bank of the Sannayat position on the 23rd failed, though it had been eystematicaljy bombarded since the 20th. Owing to "floods, it was only possible for a single brigade to attack on a very contracted front. The leading troops consisted of a composite battalion, which advanced with great gallantry and penetrated the enemy's first and second lines, through bog and submerged trenches. A few got into the third line. The brigade, however, was unable to maintain itself under the Turkish counter-attacks. The other brigades were unable to .reach their objectives across flooded and boggy ground under heavy maehin-e-gun fire. Our troops on the right bank were also unable to make much progress.
