The break in the mail and trade service to ■ the Island of Niue caused by the fire that occurred at the end of January on the ketch Kcreru, by which it was formerly carried on, ■•waa closed on Friday (says the New Zealand Herald) by the departure to the island of the ' schooner Awanui. Mr W. F. Utting, who owned . the Kereru, and also owns the Awanui, recently ■ renewed for two years his contract with the. >*ew Zealand Government, lender which he undertakes to make six trips tothe island in each ! twelve months

An interesting arrival at Lyttelton yester■day was the recently acquired steamer Tay I ■ with a load of timber from Hobart. The yes-, sel is to b& renamed the Orepnki, and under the command of Captain Dewhurst will probably' trade between Lyttelton, Nydia Bay, and another port to be announced later. The British Imperial' Oil Company's Cyrena arrived at Lyttelton on Friday morning from ' Wellington with a cargo of about 14,000 cases of • oil to discharge at Lytl;elton. Hitherto (says ■ the Sun) the wharf labourers have received Is 5d ! per hour, but have at different times asked for !' an increase. The executive of the Lyttelton Watersiders' Viaou approached the agents of ! the vessel, asking that the wages be increased to ;2s per hour. The agents and the. owners of ,' the ship had a consultation on the matter, it : being pointed out taart men in other ports were •in receipt of 2s per hour, and when that was ?made known to the. owners the request was acceded to
