NOTES ON THE RACING

(By rSir Lancelot.")

Favoured with splendid weather, there was a large attendance at Tauherenikau on Saturday to witness the opening day's racing. Among those present were some 2000 soldiers from the^camp at Featherston. They were heartily cheered when they marched on to the ground headed by the Military Camp Band under Sergeant-Major A. J. Wicks. Try Again was the only withdrawal from the Trial Hack Handicap. Backers went for the bracket (Consultation and Probation), while S'tarengo (runner-up to Coropett at Bulls) was a good second favourite. Both fancied candidates were badly placed at the start. V Pritchard got Humorist smartly away, and was never headed, winning oomforta-bly from Starengo, w'hb headed Consultation a, few i strides from the post. The winner had [ previously disappointed her connections at Nelson and Pahiatua. She is. one of i the progeny of Provocation, from White Heather (a daughter of Rosalind), and is trained by C. Pritchard at Trentham. Maraetotara and Ballyhar were pulled out of the Te Waka Hack Welter, eight starting. Backers went for Franb*onnet, a winner at Mastertou. When the field had gone about three furlongs the favourite fell, but fortunately A. Reed escaped injury. When the field had settled down Arlington was in front, with Sir. Agnes and Lord Laddo next. The latter moved up into second place at the turn but could not reach Arlington, who won in the easiest manner by two lengths. The winner, who has recently done a turn at hurdle racing, has scored at previous meetings at Tauherenikau, where he generally runs well. He was leniently treated in being placed 101b below Lord Laddo. Eewi Poto, Montana, and Byron were not taken to the meeting, and their names were missing from the list of starters for the Ifeter Handicap. . Marsinah at once set Out to make the pace, and with Taringamutu and Want showed the way at a mile, Red Ribbon being at the head of the others. Marsinah was still clear at the back; with Taringamutu next. At the bend Want headed- Marsinah, who dropped back quickly. In the straight Taringamutu headed Want and looked all over a winner a hundred yards from the post, where the lightweighted Merrie, Gain challenged, and, overhauling the tiring top-weight, won by a head. Red Ribbon was fourth and Marsinah .last. The winner was the least fancied, and scored a somewhat overdue win. She was well handled by the apprentice G. Thorner. Mcrrie Gain is owned by Mr. T. Benton, a steward and timekeeper for the club, and the win was cheered. ' ■ Taringamutu again ran consistently, and, as at Trentham, was j unlucky to be beaten by an opponent receiving a big allowance in weight. All the acceptors-for the Nursery Handicap went out. Backers went lor Menelaiis, who carried top weight Struggle led to the distance, where Miss Do Val came >vitli a late run nncl won by a length, Ladf Gewro.l Ihrw l<mgt-b.a aw.->y •Mendoua and Galore were nest,. Tk«,

winner is a stable-mate of Arlington and Taringaniutu, and this was her first win. She- is a well-grown filly by All Red" Northern Rose, and was purchased by her owner at Mr. John Buckley's clearing sale. She was ridden by Thorner, winner of the previous event. Botanist and Lord Laddo were pulled out -of the Wangimoana Handicap, Mount Victoria and Otter made the running at the start, with Ladogeur and Chillies at the head of the second division. Rounding tho bend, Nicomar ran through and was. alongside Mount Victoria as they swung into the straight, In the run to the post Ladogeur on ths outside and Chillies on the rails got to tho front, and a slashing finish resulted in favour of the top-weight by a head. Mount Victoria ran the distance out well, and beat Nicomar for third place. The race will improve the latter, who was sent out favourite. The veteran performer Medallist'- toile/l in the rear all the way. . ■ The scratchings for the Makahi Hack Handicap were Qolde'n Grafton, Manu, Probation, and Anzac. ■ Rewarewa, who held a position next to the rails, got knocked back at the start. Arrahna began smartly and was in front a couple of furlongs. Then Amber and White rushed to the front, and at the bend was showing ihe way to Happiness. The latter led into the straight, but Heeltap cut her down at the distance and won very easily. Comment, who was sent out a good favourite, was in fourth place. The scratching of Immer, Pariform, Paraoa, Tyson, Altcar, and Mount Victoria reduced the field for the Wardell Handicap, the concluding event, to five. From an uneven start Marimba went to the front and remained there, winning nicely from Botanist and Need. i
