VICE-REGAL. Their Excellencies the Governor and the Countess of'Liverpool left For Auckland yesterday, and will remain there until after the Easter holidays.
The Hon. W. Fraser (Minister of Public Works) announced yesterday that Mr. W. S. Short (Assistant Under-Sec-retary) would succeed Mr. H. J. H. Blow (retiring on superannuation) as Under-Secretary of the Department. The Hon. A. M. Myers," Minister of Customs and Munitions, will leave tonight for Auckland, where, he will take part in the Anzac Day functions, and also attend the opening of the new Auckland Grammar School. Mr. George T. Weston has resigned from the Canterbury College Board of Governors, as he has joined the Expeditionary Forces. ' Mr. S. Morell Macalister, L.L.8., of Invercargill, is leaving Wellington for England to join an officers' training corps. Mr. S. L. Beck, for the past four years connected with the Sydney. Y.M.C.A., has taken up the duties of membership secretary of the Auckland Y.M.C.A. The death is announced of Mr. J. \V. Cassin, well known in business circles in Canterbury. He was identified with the New Zealand Gun Clubs' Association, of which for maiiy years he was secretary. Lieutenant Alfred George Thomas Bryan, of the 12th Reinforcements, was to-day, on the application of Mr. H. Van Staverern admitted by his Honour the Chief Justice (Sir .Robert Stout) as a solicitor of the Supreme Court. In connection with the Jacob Joseph scholarships, the Victoria College Council last evening decided to award one scholarship to Mr. J. B. C'uddie, and defer consideration of Mr L. J. Pilkington's application until next year. Mr. rilkington is at present at Samoa. A private cable message announces the death on 11th April, at Petersfield, Hants, of Captain Andrew Hamilton Russell, father of General Sir Andrew Russell, and biother of the late lion. Sir W. R. Russell. The late Captain Andrew H. Russell came to New Zealand as a child, with his father, Lieut.Colonel A. H. Russell. In the early sixties he took up land with his brother, Sir William, in Hawkes Bay. He returned to England about 1880, where he had lived since that date. A very old and respected resident of Petone, Mr. Joseph E. Jackson, died at his residence, Nelson-street, yesterday. The late Mr. Jackson wa.s born in Lancashire, England, in 1852, and came out with his parents in the Indian Queen in 1854. His father, Mr. Edwin Jackson, immediately settled in Petone, which was then a wilderness of bush and swamp, there being only three houses in the district. Mr. Edwin Jackson acquired the property now called Jackson-street, from Nelson-street to Beach-street, and the land adjacent. As this land was; subdivided, Mr. Jackson ■ gave portions as a right-of-way, and1 hence the street came- to be known us Jackson-sfreet. Deceased was educated at Lower Hutt, the school being held in the old blockhouse. The late Mr. Jackson was employed for many years as a- machinist on the Independent, and continued with the paper when it became merged into the New Zealand Times. He afterwards became engaged in farming pursuits, in the Wainui-o-mata Valley, from which he retired eleven years ago. He has since resided in Petone. He was married in 1879 to the eldest daughter of Mr. William Profuse, of Wainui-p----mata. Deceased had been in ill-health for some years, but was taken seriously ill at Longburn a week ago, and was brought home on Tuesday by motor-car. He rapidly sank, however, and passed avva.y yesterday morning. The late Mr. Jackson leaves a widow, two sons, Mr. M. Jackson, of Onehunga, and Mr. E. Jackson, of Petone; one daughter,. Miss L. Jackson, of Petone ; a grandson, and his only sister, Mrs. J. Wakeham, of Petone. The funeral takes place on Saturday. ■'
