TAHITIAN TROOPS
NEW ZEALAND'S KINDNESS MUCH APPRECIATED.
The Hon. James Allen (Minister for Defence) has received from His Excellency the Governor, Lord Liverpool; copies of letters received by him dealing with the recruits from Tahiti who recently passed through New Zealand. One is from the British Consul ;it Pa.peete, and is as follows:—•" In reference to the French recruits from Tahiti, who have lately passed through New Zealand on their way to Xoumea and France, I have the honour to enclose herewith a copy of a letter which I have this day received from His Excellency 2il. Gustav Julien, Governor of this colony, in which he expresses in the name of the people of Tahiti, and that of his "Government and himself personally, sincere thanks and appreciation for all the attention and kindness which have been extended by k'our Excellency and the people of New Zealand towards'these recruite." M. Julien's letter is as follows :— ' It lias been conveyed to me through M. Chayet, the Consul-General for Prance at Sydney, and through him, M. Rigoreau, our Consul .it Auckland, that the two Tahitian contingents are on their passage, and that during their stayin English territory had been the recipients of most extreme attention. In the- name of our Island inhabitants, granted for the first occasion the honour of serving France on the battlefields of Europe, also in the name of the representatives of these people, as well ns in my own name and that of the Govern* ment of the Republic, I have to express my unalterable gratitude to the British authorities and the worthy inhabitants of Australia and New Zealand for the kindness shown by them to our soldiers, defenders in the same great cause as ours. I remain, sir. with the assurance of my highest respect and all my best wishes.—(Signed) G. Julien."
