SCARLET FEVER
OUTBREAK IN NELSON,
"There has been quite an epidemic of seariet fever in. Nelson," said Dr Sydney Smith, District Health Officer, to a reporttr. "Altogether 86 cases have been reported since the beginning of January. Tho greater number of the cases have beon associated wiih two particular schools. Tho spread of the disease is no doubt caused by tho mildness of tho epidemic, many parents probably confusing the disease with a rash which is frequent in the district during the hop-picking season.. These mild attacks arc capable, if not properly treated, of causing grave disease to certain of the internal organs, and also of transmitting tho disease in its most virulent form in other cases. This mild type of scarlet fever has iilso been present in Wellington for tome timo, and parents are urged to have medical assi.stanco in every case of obscure feverish condition.
