Although exhibits at the Hutt Valley Horticultural Autumn Show yesterday were not so numerous as in foimer years, their quality was exceptionally high. The arrangements were excellent, . thanks to the efforts of Mr. A. Hardham (secretary) and an energetic committee. The attendance was good, but not so large as usual. The judges were: —Chrysanthemums, Mr. W.' H. IJ.l J. Barber; decorative class, Miss ' Poole and Mr. W. B. Hardy. Among the exhibits which called for special mention was that of Mr. A. J. Shailer, fche well-known expert grower of chrysanthemums, who had a splendid show of cut flowers. Mr. T. .Waugh and Mr. H. Poole competed in the "group of flowering and pot plants" class. Mr. T. Waugh showed a notable collection of palms and ferns, and special mention should be made of some fine blooms of Nerine lily. Mr. H. Poole's display included some beautiful exotic | ferns, crocus palms, coleus, etc. The vegetables, too, made a brave display, and included a pumpkin weighing about lewt, exhibited by Mr. S. Westbury, who gained 17 firsts and 14 seconds. The proceeds of the show are to be handed over to the Wounded Soldiers Fund. The following are the awards:—The R.H.S. medal and prize, for the champion bloom in the chrysanthemum class were awarded to R. Miller's exhibit, "William Turner." This. bloom is of the Japanese variety, pure white, with incurved petals, and was much admired. There was a creditable display of cactus dahlias, the championship in this class being £iven to Mrs. Harris's exhibit, "Pierrot." Mr. T. Waugh was awarded a silver and' Mr. A. J. 'Shailer a bronze R.H.S. medal, the former for an exhibit of pot plants, and the latter for chrysanthemums, dahlias, and a special collection of -collarette dahlias, a class, that appeared for the first time. Westbury 2; six white blooms, B. Mothes 2; six yellow blooms, F. Westbury 2; six pink, F. Westbury 2; three hirsute - (distinct), F. Westbury 2; six chrysanthemums in pots, H. Poole 1.
