Owing to pressure on our space a number of letters to the Editor have been unavoidably held over. As a result of -the recommendations of the Federal Prices Adjustment Board, the following prices for bread in Melbourne have now - been fixed by the Cabinet: —lib loaf, cash over the counter, 2d ; booked over the counter, 2^d ; cash on delivery, 2£d ; booked on delivery, 3d ; 21b loaf, 3£d, 4d, 4d, and 4*d; 41b loaf, 6id, 7d, 7d, and 7J,d. These prices apply only to Melbourne. Other capital cities will be visited in turn, and delivery and ' booking charges will be fixed there, in accordance with special lo:al conditions found to exist. In reference to an article in last night's Post dealing with the prospective shortage of coal in the city, Messrs. W. J. Gaudin and Son in a letter assert that it was quite unwarranted at the present juncture. It was unfair not only to the merchants but to the public generally. • " The only result," says the letter', " will be a rush on the coal merchants by consumers who wish to lay in a stock, a proceeding that will greatly inconvenience the trade, which, in the present state of the labour market, finds delivery difficult enough even under ordinary conditions. Householders may rest assured that tl.ere is no immediate cause for alarm. Fair stocks are held in the city, a. shipload from Newcastle is due immediately, and there are three mines in the Waikato supplying Wellington regularly, quite independent of any shortage of shipping facilities. As to economy in tha use of coal, the- increase in the wholesale . price of the article, which the merchants have been compelled to pass on to the public, will no doubt act as a deterrent to waste, by the average consumer, at any rate." In reply, The Post states that its information came from *a authoritative source, and was fully eu- . dorsed by a merchant i.. 'ay.. Another of the' causes for a shortage is the number of miners who have deemed it their duty to .enlist. The scarcity of labour has limited the output all round. Messrs. S. Brown, Ltd., state that even if thera is a shortage of sea-borne coal, ample supplies for'tho Wellington market can be obtained from the collieries..in the Auckland district ; BULLDOGS CREATE CONFIDENT The motorist who is looking for t whiih provide the highest efficiency \ find them in the All-British Build Tire. The unstinted praise which h.\ been received from users of Bulldoi; covers, ,is due more than anything el-< to the feeling of confidence which evt motorist should have in his tires.
