PROTEST AGAINST A CANARD

On the western front there has been heavy fighting, a good deal of it, particularly south-west of Fort Douaumont, being of a hand-to-hand nature. At one place the French made a gain of ground. The enemy commenced, probably on Thursday (the date is not mentioned in the cables), a strong attack on the new British trenches at St. Eloi. At latest report the fighting continued.
In regard to a canard that lias been floating about the Netherlands to the effect that Britain had sent an ultimatum to the Dutch Government, the British Legation at The Hague has made a protest, which, it is reported, has created a good impression.
In the German Reichstag the Imperial Chancellor delivered a comprehensive speech, which makes interesting, if amusing, reading.
There is a total absence of news from the Russian front,
