10 THE EDITOR. Sir,—-By the mail just to hand I have received' from Australia a letter containing the cable from New Zealand mentioning ' Mr. Payne's attack upon the Hon. Mr. Allen, which concludes wiUi the words, "Mr. Allen by birth and descent is a Norwegian." Upon this the correspondent makes the following comment, that may be worthy of reproduction: "I always understood Mr. Allen was a South Australian, whatever his father and mother were, and that he came to Dunedin as a boy. Personally, I could never follow him in politics, but I would be as likely to doubt the man's ability as I would doubt his Joyaity. As to administration, I wonder if there is a man holding a responsible position at the present time who is not pulled to pieces by irresponsible critics. Mistakes always are made, but it isn't always the fault of the heads. On.several occasions the Minister of Defence here (New South Wales) has been blamed by the Opposition for things done by men 'that they themselves appointed."—l am, etc., . ' BUBBLES.
