WELLINGTON RACES
NOTES FROM, TRENTHAM
(By "Sir Lancelot.")
A dense fog hung over Trentham this morning, and delayed the commencement of training operations until 5.30.
0. Pritchard was early astir. He sent Roumania, Mount Victoria, and Humorist together five furlongs on the tan track, the trio finishing in that order. Roumania is to take his place in the Thompson Handicap, in which the company is more select that he has been accustomed to. Happiness was better than Miraculous in a five-furlongs sprint on the grass. Taringamutu (E. Manson) easily held Ormesby (M'Donald) in a mile gallop on the tan. Taringamutu has been paid up for in both the Thompson and Railway Handicaps. Her trainer (J. Ayres) informed me that she was likely to compete in the first-named event, and he understood A. Reed had been engaged to ride her.
Rose Pink and Struggle finished together in a half-mile spurt on the tan. The latter has been allowed to drop out of her engagement on the opening day. Marsinah (C. Reed), who is not a good track worker, was several lengths behind Seadown (R. Reed) at the end of six furlongs on the grass. The former was allowed to drop out of the Thompson Handicap, and is to take part in the Silverstream Hack Handicap, in which she will be ridden by S. Rekl. Seadown has filled out since he last raced. He will be ridden in the Tiirnkori Handicap by.A. Reed. A. Rore gave the Blenheim pair, Heeltap and Ballyhar, light tasks. Menelaus (R. Reed)- was too good for Mascot (C. Reed) in a four-furlongs sprint.
R. J. Mason, who arrived from the South the previous day, had Emperador, Nones, and Swale out. They were not asked to do much. Emperador and Nones were both allowed to drop out of the Thompson Handicap. Nones will compete in the New Zealand. St. Leger Stakes and Emperador in the North Island Challenge Stakes. Swale, a two-year-old by Danube, is ; not engaged' on the first day. He may be seen out on the second day of the meeting.
Baimsdale had no difficulty in finishing in front of Miss Deval (a two-year-old by All Red) in a half-mile sprint.
Pall Mall and Sir Saracen were associated in a six-furlongs sprint, and finished in that order.
Maltegarde, who looks well after her spell, was among the local horses worked. She will probably make her reappearance at Tauherenikau.
Chemise (the two-year-old full-sister to Multiply) is not so well grown as most of the progeny of Multifid that have raced. This may be because .they have been given plenty of time to mature. She sprinted about half a mile. Multiplication, Multiply,, and Chortle all bear a solid appearance. H. J. Jefferd informed me that Multiplication would be ridden in the Thompson Handicap by R. Reed, and Chortle in the Railway Handicap by S. Reid. The statement that had appeared that Chortle would not start on the opening day was incorrect. The horses had previously proved themselves good, weight carriers and great milers. In' the Douro Cup, at 'the Summer Meeting, Multiplication carried 9.12 and ran a mile in lmin 40 2-ssec. On Thursday next he will have 231b less to carry, but in better company. It was said that Chortle was harshly treated with 9.9. He won at the Summer Meeting, with'9.s, and it is difficult to see how the handicapper could have let him in any lighter to give his opponents a chance.' The team will journey to Auckland at Easter. Chortlo and Multiplication have both been paid up for in the mile face at Ellershe.
G. Clarke, the well-known lightweight, made a quick recovery from the accident he met with recently. He was riding the members of R.. J. Mason's team at work this morning. ;
A. Reed will be riding, some of Mr. W. G. Stead's horses at the coming meeting. He will be on Eligible in the Gold Cup, but had to refuse the ride on the English filly Shrill in the Tinakori Handicap.
Messrs. Williams have been negotiating for the purchase of the yearling full-brother to Chortle, named Chuckle, subject to a veterinary examination. ■
The two-year-old Napoleon, who recently went' into H. Telford's stable, is still growing, and is to be turned out for twelve months to give him time to mature.
The name of Mr. J. E. Henrys, the well-known handicappev. has been freely mentioned in Australian papers as a likely successor to Mr. W. A. Menzies1 for the position of handicapper to the1 Victoria Racing Club, the leading club of Australasia. Mr. Henrys informs me that there is no truth in these statements. Applications for the position closed on 31st March.
