THE GRAVES OF GALLIPOLI
On 25th April the minds and hearts of the people of Australia and New Zealand will go back to the day when men of these lands, with others, their brave kinsmen of the Mother Country, rushed ashore at Gallipoli, to the won-dei-meni of Tnrks and Germans. Speakers and writers have declared many a time that the deeds of that day and of the following arduous months will never be forgotten. A test of that sentiment will be seen in the care of the graves. When heroes were killed, their comrades did their best- to mark the graves, and since the retirement from the Peninsula communication has been opened up with Turkey in respect to that ground which valiant manhood- consecrated with life-blood. A correspondent has words for the general public on this subject in The Post to-day, and it is a timely reminder. Of course, relatives and friends in many cases will be eager to help with a worthy memorial, but not all the next-of-kin can afford to incur any considerable expense in these times of stress. As the men fought for "the nation, it is the nation's duty to honour them in death, as it is to honour those who return from the war. The nation that forgets the honourable dead is doomed to decay. We hope that Anzac Day will not pass away in words alone; we hope that the reverence for the dead will also be expressed in a fund to maintain the graves in a manner worthy of New Zealand.
