The Hon. A. L. Herdman returned to Wellington to-day from the North. The Hon. Dr. M'Nab is at present visiting Gisborne. Sir Joseph. Ward is expected back from | Eotorua to-morrow, afternoon. He is travelling from Eotorua via Napier. ( The Hon. W. Fraser (Public Works Minister) left for Auckland last night. He will remain in Auckland till Monday, and will then leave for Whangarei. On Wednesday he will motor or'drive to Paparoa, and will proceed ontoMaungatoroto. On Friday he travels by motor to Auckland, via Warkworth, and will leave Auckland on Saturday at midday for Wellington. Messrs. J. C. Blair and B. J. Ashton, of Melbourne, who were former residents of Wellington, are revisiting this city. Dr. Valintine, Inspector-General of Hospitals, left Wellington last night for Timaru. Mr. James Robertson, Mayor of Law- J rence for the past nine years, has tendered his resignation, as he is leaving the district. Mr. C. W. Raltray, of Dunedin, a director of tha Union Steam Ship Company, Ltd.j left for Vancouver by the Makura yesterday. The Rev. G. Ernest Hale, of the Unitarian Church in Wellington, who has been visiting the South Island, returned to Wellington yesterday. Dr. G. Hart Osborne, of OpotiM, has arranged to go to Kotorua in February for war relief "work Dr. Scott Watson, whom he will Telieve at Eotorua, is going to the front. The Hector Memorial Award and Prize for 1916 has been awarded by the New Zealand Institute to Sir Ernest Rutherford, F.R.S., and Professor of Physics at Manchester University. A Press Association message from Napier states :—Mr. W. W. Bird, M.A., for many years inspector of Native schools, has been appointed chief inspector of schools for Hawkes Bay, vies Mr. H. Hill, retired on superannuation. The Rev. Dr. Gibb, who has been inspecting Presbyterian Home Mission stations in Hawkes Bay, has returned to Wellington, and will leave on a similar visit to Westland and Southland tomorrow night. Dr. L. A. Spedding has been appointed resident medical officer of Auckland HosSital for six months, and Dr. J. Miller onorary anaesthetist for a like period. Dr. Spedding returned to New Zealand in the hospital ship Maheno. Mr. J. Gray, of the Hansard staff, who for some months has been giving valuable assistance to the secretarial staff of the Minister of Defence, has been appointed to act temporarily as secretary of the Recruiting Board: : Mr. T. W. Brown and Mr. Baily Mansfield, of the staff of the Department .of Agriculture, intend (reports the Auckland Star) to enlist for service at the front. Mr. Brown is an old campaigner, having seen fighting during the- South African war. . Mr. W. A. Kennedy, local manager of the Union Steam Ship Company, has been granted • extended leave of absence for health reasons. During Mr. Kennedy's absence, Mr. S. K. Sleigh, manager of the Christchurch branch, -will act as local manager. _ The resignation of Miss Tewsley, aa--rista'nt at the City Library, was accepted with regret,by the council last evening, on the recommendation of the Library Committee; and it was decided to forward her a letter, expressing the council's appreciation of her good work'during her eight years' service. - The City Council last evening accorded a vote of condolence to Mrs. Wheeler, the widow of Mr. P: M. Wheeler, an old and respected member of the City Council staff, whose death had taken place since the council last met. Sympathy was also expressed with Mr. J. Ames, the City Valuer, and father-in-law of deceased. ' Pte. Lewen , Maughan Barnett, who was reported in last night's casualty list as believed to be killed, was the only son of Mr. J. Maughan Barnett, Auckland City Organist, formerly holding a similar position in Wellington. Pte. Barnett was a little over 20 years of age, a native of New Zealand. At the time of his enlistment he was engaged in farming pursuits. A statue of the late Canon Jordan was unveiled in the Tauranga Domain yesterday by the Hon. W. H. Herries (states a Press Association message). The lato canon was for forty years vicar of Tauranga and several times Mayor oi the town. He died in October, 1912. The. statue was erected by' subscribers— friends in Tauranga and throughout the Dominion. Tha weather was wet, and mitigated against the attendance, which included representative men from Te Puke, Katikati, and elsewhere. • Speeches wro delivered by Mr. Herries and Mr. M'Millan (Mayor of Tauranga), the Rev. B. D. Bice, and others, eulogising the late canon. Mr. Samuel Blackwood-Nelson, who died at Ashburton on Tuesday last, at the age of seventy-nine years, was ono of the pioneers of the Ashburton County, having resided in the district for fortytwo years. He was one of the founders of the Asbburton. Rifle Corps, and was a sergeant up till' the time the Territorial movement. was brought into force. He was an excellent rifle shot. In tho early days he was a member of the Ashburton Borough Council. He was a prominent member of the Orange Lodge, also a Freemason; He was one of the found-, ers of the Ashburton Club. For many years he followed the occupation of a building contractor, and, amongst other buildings in Ashburton, he erected the Municipal Chambers and Bank of New Zealand. , Private Albert Charles Cowdrey, of the 16tli Waikatos, reported to-day as having been killed on 27th April of last year, was a grandson of the late Mr. Edwin Cuff, of Halcombe, who served as a seTgeant in the T&raru (Thames) Rifle Volunteers in Waikato in 1869 during the Te Kooti trouble. Three of his uncles, Cuff, were through the last Boer war. His brother Thomas was severely wounded at Anzac on the same date as he (Albert) was killed. ■ Two of his brothers, five* nephews, and five first cousins have enlisted. Joshua Cuff, of Invercargill, was reported as dead last week. Mrs. Cuff, sen:, is the mother of 15 children; nearly all the uncles have served or are serving the Empire. One grandson left with the 9th Reinforcements.. Mr. J. W. Davis, formerly of the New Zealand Survey Department, has received the appointment of chief draughtsman to the Survey Department of Samoa, which, since the occupation of the islands by Great Britain, has been" taken over by the Imperial authorities, and of which Mr. Norman H. M'Donald, another New Zealander, is chief surveyor. Mr. Davis was for twenty-one years inspecting surveyor in the New Zealand service. Then he held in succession tho positions of chief draughtsman in the offices in Wellington, Christchurch, and Auckland—whiter he came for' the purr pose of reorganising the Land Transfer Office. Subsequently he became chief draughtsman in the Wellington district office, and next in the head office of the Department. About six years ago Mr. Da.Vis retired on superannuation, and since then he has•been engaged in. private surveying in the Rbtorua and. Holdanga districts.
