TRENTHAM RACES

SECOND DAY OF WELLINGTON MEETING

PROSPECTS FOR TO-MORROW

(By vSir Lancelot.")

Although they are not so large as on the first day, satisfactory fields are engaged to-morrow, when the second day's events of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting will be decided. Neither Black Ada nor Hinemanu, winner and runner-up in the Trentham Welter, was engaged in the Mungaroa Welter. Rongora, who filled third place, has gone up 21b, and Whakahoki and Lady Nolan have each been dropped 21b. Hilltop was unplaced in the JRuapehu Hack Handicap, and Ticino in the Trial. Two new horses in Ormesby and Trickery are engaged. It does not appear to be a strong field. In the January Welter Handicap, one mile, Moulu, who ran third in the Anniversary Handicap, has been raised 21b. Orleans, Down, Combustion, Prince Laddo, and Mystified have been dropped lib. Orleans and Combustion were both unlucky at the start on the first day.

In the Wellington Stakes, five furlongs, Desert Gold and Nones have each incurred the full penalty of 141bs. Nones ran brilliantly in lhe Waterloo Plate, in which she ran the first six furlongs in lmin 13seo. Desert Gold put up a great performance in the Royal Stakes at Ellerslie, and she will probably be the batter backed of the pair if started. .Mr. Lowry has also a useful second string in Egypt, who has 151bs. less to carry than in the Nursery Handicap, in which he ran th© distance in 59 4-ssec. Egypt is down to concede Hyttus 31bs. They met on similar terms in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, in which Egypt was second, and Hyttus unplaced. The subsequent form of Hyttus makes him out to be as good, if not better, than Egypt. In the Nursery Handicap, Tun over the same distance as thy Wellington Stakes on the first day at Trentham, Hyttus was asked to give Egypt 71bs. In the Midsummer Handicap at Ellerslie, Hyttus carried 9.2, and won easing up in 60 3-ssec. . F.. Davis , may, therefore, consider it necessary to start both Desert Gold and Egypt. With the best three and two-year-olds oE the season engaged, it will not be surprising if the most interesting contest to date is witnessed.

The place-getters in the Cup are all in the Racing Club Handicap, one mile and, three furlongs. Bee has gone up 141b,. First Glance 71b, and Balboa 21b. Taringamutu has also gone up 21b. Rewi Poto and Welcome Nugget have each come down lib, Sir Alba and Adjutant 21b, and Indigo 31b. There is a new horse in the race in I»adogeur, who is nicely in with 7.4. He ran second in a, mile and a-quarter race at EHerslie, so there should be no doubt about his getting the other furlong. The shorter distance will also suit Taringamutu if she was not knocked out by the race on the first day. The Gup race may have sharpened Indigo up.

Menelaus and Elation, who finished behind the place-getters in the Nursery Handicap on the opening day, are engaged in the Fitzherbert Handicap, Barley Sugar, who is also in, carried 7.13 when he ran second in the Nursery Handicap, five furlongs, on the second day at Hawkes Bay at New Year.

The Douro Cup field is headed by Multiplication and Wishful, the two best hacks in commission. Marsinah may be expected to do better than she did on the first day. Of the others, Roumania, who finished close up to the place-getters in the Trial, Jean Laddo, and Hinemanu have shown recent winning form.

The field engaged in the Disposal Stakes, six furlongs, is of better class than usual. The running on the first day points to Pyjama, Hydrus, and Shaki as the best of those engaged. The Karamu stable has a. good record in connection -with selling races at local meetings. :

The-winner and runner-up in the Telegraph Handicap failed to pay up in the. Metropolitan. The other place-get-ter, Chakwana, raised lib, is in. Downham has been dropped lib, and Tirana and Sweet Corn 21b each. Bimeter is down to > run, also Flying Start and Marco Bello. On the concluding day of the Auckland Meeting Bimeter won with 8.7. Now ho has 41b more.
