NUMEROUS ENGAGEMENTS IN THE AIR NINETEEN ENCOUNTERS IN A DAY. LONDON, 20th January. Sir Douglas Haig reports: Sixteen of our aeroplanes on 17th January considerably damaged the enemy's depot at Lesars, north-east of Albert. There were nineteen air encounters during the day, five of the enemy's aircraft being driven down. We lost two aeroplanes. A party of our troops raided the enemy's trenches north of the River Lys, and captured some prisoners. PARIS, 20th January. A communique states: We cannonaded a body of German troop 3 which was moving northwards of Courte Chevauchee, in the Argonne. In reprisal for two aircraft dropping bombs on Nancy, a French air squadron dropped twenty-two bombs and damaged Metz and the Amaville railway station.

The High reports: — LONDON, 20th January, 12.35 p.m. In Lihons sector an enemy'blockhouse was destroyed. West of Craonuc, in the region of Ailles, enemy works were seriously damaged. The bombardment was general.
