GRANDSTAND MISHAP

LANDING GIVES WAY.

Just after the Cup race had been run at, the Trentham Meeting yesterday, and when the crowds were descending from the grandstand, some boards in a landing on the staircase leading tc the top of the stand commenced tr crack and give way. There was great excitement and some confnsion in the crowd on the staircase, but fortunately the supports of the landing held good, and calm was restored. The boards had apparently decayed as the result of.a leakage from a defective water pipe. After the collapse of the boards was noticed two constables were told off to prevent other people getting on to the broken landing. Repairs are to be' effected before Uy. morrow's meeting. '
