SADDLERS' DISPUTE
BEFORE CONCILIATION COUNCIL.
The Wellington Saddlery Workers' dispute was considered by the Conciliation Council this morning, Mr. P. Hally (Conciliation Commissioner) presiding. The assessors were : For ■ the union, Messrs. H. Chapman, G. Archer, and H. Heap; for the employers,' Messrs. W. Wiggins, jun., H. M. Evans, and P. R. Russell. Mr. W. A. Grenfell appeared as agent for the! employers, and Mr. E. Kennedy for the union.
The claims of the union were for a 48-hour week \ith overtime at the rate of time and . a half for the first two hours, double -'>ime thereaftet, and on Sundays and hdidays prescribed by the Factories Act. Wages were sought at the. following r.ites :—Journeymen, £3 12s a .week, instead of Is 2d an hour, as at present; apprentices, Ist year 15s a week, 2nd £1, 3rd £1 ss, 4th £1 12s 6d, sth £2 ; female stitchers or machinists, Ist year 12s 6d a week, 2nd 17s 6d, 3rd £1' 2s 6d, 4th £1 10s, next six months £1 15s, thereafter £2 10s. There were other clauses dealing with preference, under-rate workers, .and other matters. .
The employers, in their counterclaims, proposed a renewal of the old award.
The Council went into - committee to discuss the proposals.
