NATIVE SCHOOLS

CONFERENCE OF TEACHERS.

(BT TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND. 19th January. . A conference, under the auspices of the Native School Teachers' Association, was opened to-day, those present including Sir Edward "Gibbes, Secretary for Education. In the course- of a speech, Sir L. Gibbes expressed the view that the present Minister of Education would take an early opportunity of making a tour of the schools. Native school education had been distinctly well carried out under exceptional difficulties. "Had it not been for the influence of. the teacher," -said Sir Edward, "the Native race might have become a- menace to.the .community instead of the useful adjunct which it was now being proved to be." (Applause.)
