FORDS PEACE PARTY
GONE TO THE HAGUE VIA GERMANY. NO MEETINgFaLLOWED EN ROUTE. (Received January 8, 2.30 p.m.) COPENHAGEN, 7th January. The members of Mr. Ford's peace party, with the Scandinavian delegates, have left for The Hague, via Germany. A special permit has been issued, but it does not allow meetings to be held in Germany.
.According to details of the sinking of the German cruiser Undine received at Copenhagen, the German steam ferry Preussen, with a full cargo of loaded railway trucks, left Trelleborg a,t noon on Sunday, 7th November, and was met outside Swedish territorial waters by a convoy consisting of the Undine and a large torpedo-boat. Twenty-two miles put the periscope of a British submarine was observed simultaneously from the three ships, but before there was time to do anything a terrific explosion occurred, and the. Undine was hit by a torpedo. Immediately afterwards another torpedo crashed through' the cruiser's engine-room. The torpedo-boat, which at this juncture was 100 yards from the cruiser, came \ip to assist the. Undine. The Undine's deck was soon seen to be only a couple of inches above the water, and the'crew were struggling to get on board a number of small rafts which * con voving vessels carry for all emergencies. Out of a crew of 218, 199 were saved, but a number of the latter are seriously wounded, and six died on their way to Sassnitz, where a special train was in waiting'to take them to Kiel.
