THE BARALONG AFFAIR
GERMAN REPRISALS EXPECTED AMERICANS BELIEVE PRISONERS WILL BE SHOT. NEW YORK, 7th January. N-ew York newspapers comment that the British Note on the Baralong case does not deny the facts contained in the affidavits of the Americans aboard the Nicosian, and point out that the broad hints contained in the.German Note are apparently intended to convey the threat that Germany would consider the absence of punishment of the alleged perpetrators by the British Government as a full excuse for reprisals. They also publish a London message declaring that it is believed the next step to bo expected will take the form of shooting a number of captured British officers and men, equalling those lost on the. submarine which the Baralong sank. ' • It is considered unlikely that Germany will accept Sir Edward Grey's suggestion of an investigation by American naval officers.
