WHY DID HAMILTON EFFACE HIMSELF?
THE DELAY OF THE GO.VERN-. MENT. LONDON, 7th January! The Times, commenting on Sir Jan Hamilton's despatch, says : " Paralysis overtook the Government after its re-' fnsal of Sir lan Hamilton's request for more men, and the actual abandonment was delayed for four months, giving point to Sir Edward Carson's declaration that tho Government could not make up their minds. The Suvla landing was in many respects deplorable, but when everybody else was amply and deservedly blamed, the final question to be answered is why Sir lan Hamilton, who was on the"' spot and knew the right course to follow, meekly effaced himself at the critical moment."
