A STORY OF NELSON.

'in a book entitled "Eastbourne Memories," published about five years ago, the author, Mr. George F Chambers, F.R.A.S., repeats an amusing, story of Lord Nelson which was told to him by the third Earl of that name. It seems that the hero of Trafalgar once found himself in possession, of a bad sovereign, and inadvertently paid a cabman with it in mistake for a shilling. " Cabby drove off quite satisfied. He had only gone a little way, however, when Lord. Nelson discovered the mistake, and shouted after him to stop. Cabby heard the shout, turned round, and derisively flourished the coin in the air. History has not recorded his feelings at a later time in the day." It is worth while to recall at this anniversary of Trafalgar (says T.P.s Weekly) the reply made by Pitt to General Walpole, when the General protested that a. higher rank than •" Baron Nelson of the Nile" should be conferred on the victor, "Admiral Nelson's fame," he said, " would be co-equal with the-British name; and it would be remembered that he had obtained the greatest naval victory on ricord when no man would think of asking whether he had been created a baron, a- viscount, or an earl." And now, more than a- century later, we simply say " Nelson," conscious of n.ll the glory attacked to the mere name, titled or not.
