MAGISTRATE'S COURT

The sitting of the Magistrate's- Court to-day was presided over by Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. William Tierney, a soldier, and a prohibited person, with five previous convictions for insobriety, appeared on a further charge of drunkenness, and also for a breach of his prohibition order, inasmuch as he entered licensed premises. He pleaded so hard for another chance that lie was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. "I was more tired than drunk," was the plea nut forward by Guy Cockbuni, a statutory third offender. The "tired feeling" cost him 40s, in default three days' imprisonment. Joseph Smith, a. second offender, was psnalised to the extent of 10s, with the option of 48 hours in gaol. Five first offenders were also dealt with.. George Murray, who, while prohibited, was found in possession of whisky, was fined £2, in default, seven days' imprisonment. A Swiss named Arnold . Eutschi, a duly articled seaman, was charged with having, on New Year's Day, deserted the Kia Ora. He was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment, and ordered to be placed aboard the vessel. Albert Cole, who, on lGth December, visited one of the. craft in the Boat Harbour belonging to William Bird, and stole carpenters' tools valued at £1 Ss 6d, was sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. Defendant was on probation in connection with" a previous offence, and will.duly lie brought before the Supremo Court for sentence for a breach of his probation order.
