HAILSTORM IN THE CITY

A hailstorm, accompanied by thunder and lightning, was experienced in Wellington last night a few minutes before 10 o'clock. The thunderstorm, which was unique for this part of the Dominion, was quite local. In some parts' the ground was white with hail,' which j also piled up inches deep against fences and doorways in some places. In other parts, however, there was hardly any I trace of hail. A feature of' the storm was that the lightning was accompanied almost simultaneously by thunder, which indicated that the disturbance was quite close. The rainfall recorded at the Meteorological Observatory was .07 inch. The hail was not large and wa6 fairly uniform in size. The weather has been unsettled and squally generally, with hail showers scattered over various districts, and strong south-westerly winds. The barometer has risen everywhere, and gales were reported from, Invercargill and Balclutha this morning, and a moderate gale at Manukau Heads in the North. The forecast is for squally and changeable weather, generally showery, especially on the West Coast and in southern districts. The barometer has a rising tendency at present, but is likely to fall everywhere after thirty-six hours i Moderate to strong southerly winds are |to be expected in the meantime, but | westerly winds, strong to gale, are probable about Foveaux Strait. Warning | signals for westerly gales are exhibited at Nugget Point and Centre Island.
