"PELORUS JACKS"
OFF THE TARANAKI COAST.
(ST TELEGRAPH—SPECIAL TO THE TOST.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day
Regarding porpoise 6 like Pelorus Jack seen by the Kaitoa's passengers on the run from Nelson to Wellington last week, a, well-known Christchurch resident says he is. convinced that Pelorus Jack was not the only member of the species abotlt the ; , New Zealand coast. He travelled in the Rotoiti from New Plymouth to Wellington a few years ago, and Mr. Hutchison, the chief engineer, told him there was a small school of Pelorus Jacks off Cape Egmont. These were seen about the same place, raced alongside the vessel for some time, and disappeared about the same place. He was confident they were the same species as Pelorus Jack. ' On the trip this Christchurch gentleman saw five of these fish playing alongside the' Rotoiti, off Cape Egmont, and they were just like Pelorus Jack. He''has mentioned the matter in the hope that some of the Union Company's officers who know the Taranaki coast %yell can throw light on the subject, and say if the fish are still th*re.
