11th REINFORCEMENTS
NEED FOR SPURT IN RECRUITING.
Difficulty is still being experienced in completing the 11th Reinforcements, though during the past month urgent appeals have been issued to the eligible manhood of New Zealand to make up the number. Defence Headquarters announced this morning that on New Year's Day tho 11th wero still over 300 men short. During the week the South Island had not done so well as the North in sending men into camp to reduce tho deficiency.
Tho 12th Reinforcements will commence mobilisation at Trentham on the lOtli inst. At present there are not sufficient, recruits available to .complete the draft, and it is evident that if the 12ths are not to go in short a considerable spurt will require to be mado In recruiting during the present week. Since Friday last a further eight men from No. 5 Group (Wellington City and Suburbs) have been sent into camp at Trentham to make up shortages in the 11th Reinforcements and infantry n.c.o.'s. Their names are as under: — Mounted Rifles: H. Urquhart Infantry: W. G. Milligan, J. W. Spicer, H. Shaw, P. George, J. Colter, J. Welsh. N.C.0., Infantry: A. R. Russell. On New Year's Day the following men 'were serif, to Auckland as Wellington City's quota towards filling the vacancies' in the Samoan garrison:—W. G. Chisnall, W. A. Fuller, P. Hansen, E. F. Simpson.
